How It Works

I act as a consultant, a guide, a sounding board to take you through discovering and realizing your vision for great space. Sometimes that means generating ideas, thinking out of the box, sometimes that means a reality check, and sometimes that’s a hands on design education.  The goal is all the same; to realize great design.

I expect my clients to bring their energy to the table and I bring my enthusiasm and expertise in design.  Whether clients have an ambiguous idea they can’t articulate or a keen sense of style but lack the full confidence to make it happen, I meet them where they are at and help them discover, then realize their vision.

It is my job to draw out what the client wants and guide them through the complex puzzle of making visual elements relate.  I am like the caddy who guides the golfer through the course.  No need to worry about how to play this course, I’ll ensure a good result. I take clients through the shopping process and handle all the logistics so they are free to explore and discover with my expertise and guidance in a relaxing positive experience that will leave them satisfied in their own work.

Implementation - Making it Good

Design is one thing but the rubber meets the road when it comes time to implement the details – working with contractors.  Often their prefered method is to get it done in whatever was is easiest for them.  That won’t do for me and that won’t work for exceptional design.  So I get onsite and work it out with them.  I listen to their concerns and figure out how to ensure a great result. Below are some of my achievements working with contractors:

  •  I once made the contractor move existing electrical lighting down about 2 inches, just to remove visual noise and make the space better – it’s the little details that make a world of difference!
  • Had a contracted replace 7 exposed double 2x6s with a solid 4x6s because I couldn’t accept a generic look of 2 bys.
  • Once a tiler cut a large rectangular opening in a large format tile for all the plumbing fixtures, I made him redo the tile and cut holes for each individual pipe for a much cleaner look.
  • I had a balcony wall reduced by 5 inches to gain better visibility and proportion.

I have many more stories but the point is that it is human nature to make life easier for ourselves but I cannot live with sub par workmanship so I stick around till its done right.
